People from all walks of life can be affected by domestic abuse. From physical violence to controlling behaviours, both men and women can become in need of urgent support.
Relatives and friends of a person they believe to be in an abusive relationship can also seek advice and support from the police or relevant charities.
In an emergency, where a person is at immediate risk, always call police on 999. If you can’t speak and are calling on a mobile, press 55 to have your call transferred to the police.

Clare’s Law
Under the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, known as Clare’s Law, you can:
- apply for information about your current partner because you’re worried they may have a history of abuse and are a risk to you
- request information about the current partner of a friend or relative because you’re worried they might be at risk
