There’s been a huge emergency response in Devizes after a body was found in a canal this evening (Friday).
999 crews, including Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance, were called to the tragic scene near Laywood Bridge shortly before 7pm.
It’s understood the body — of a man aged in his 40s — was in a difficult location, with specially-trained water rescue firefighters mounting a recovery effort.
At the height of the incident, there were four fire appliances, an ambulance and numerous police vehicles in attendance.
Emergency services had accessed the area from both Gandy Way and Horton Road, with an initial response seen in Windsor Drive.
A section of the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath has been cordoned off while the incident is dealt with.
Detectives are present and carrying out an assessment of the body. Forensics are also likely to attend in due course.
UPDATE 31 MAY: A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We responded to a report that a body had been found in the canal near Horton Avenue, in Devizes, just before 7pm yesterday evening (30/05).
“Sadly, a deceased man aged in his 40s was recovered from the canal.
“While formal identification of the body has not yet taken place, the man’s family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time.
“There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.”
