Police are expecting to deal with violence in two areas of Swindon this weekend as a suspect in a life-changing machete attack is released on bail.

Penhill and Pinehurst residents will see an increased police presence due to an anticipated increase in community tensions over a serious assault on a woman in Shalbourne Close on Sunday.

Plain clothed police officers in unmarked cars are expected to be on patrol alongside a highly visible presence to help reassure locals and quickly response to disorder.

The 19-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm, was released on police bail. A 7pm-7am curfew and bail conditions not to enter Penhill are in place.

He was arrested at an address in Pinehurst on Thursday morning, as armed police officers raided a house in Beech Avenue.

Supt Phil Staynings said: “This is a show of reassurance to the local community that we are taking this extremely seriously.

“Our actions this week have been swift and, with the help of the local community, we have made some important progress in our investigations.

“This is a message to anyone who believes that they can take the law into their own hands – you will be met with robust action.

“The community have been fantastic in their support so far and we would continue to urge anyone with information about the assault to come forward and speak to police – your call can be in confidence and will be treated anonymously if you would prefer.”

Neighbourhood Inspector Carly Nesbitt added: “We are aware of concerns from the local community and would like to reassure them that we are doing everything we can to keep them safe.

“We are working closely with our partners at Swindon Borough Council on our response and have public safety at the forefront of our minds.”

Anyone with information, no matter how small you think it may be, should call Swindon CID on 101, quoting crime reference 54200079266. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously if preferred.
